CORD BLOOD, Biology, Immunology, Banking and Clinical Transplantation
Editor: Hal E. Broxmeyer
AABB Press, Bethesda , MA , 2004
ISBN: 1-56395-176-2
455 pages, $160

Since the first umbilical cord blood transplantations have been performed in the late eighties, the literature on cord blood has exploded. A book giving a broad, yet concise overview of the cord blood field was overdue. In Cord Blood, Biology, Immunology, Banking and Clinical Transplantation, Hal Broxmeyer has brought together major players in this now large field of research, resulting in a comprehensive book covering all important aspects of cord blood. Moreover, this book brings together basic and clinical research results and is thus a good book to have on the shelf of basic research labs as well as in the clinic, to greet newcomers such as students and fellows and ease their landing into this exciting field. A rich source of stem cells, cord blood has not only become an alternative to bone marrow transplantation but also a source of intensive studies into the biology of human hematopoietic stem cells. In addition, cord blood is an excellent study model for human immune hyporesponsiveness and may teach us how to achieve immune tolerance in the fields of hematopoietic stem cell and solid organ transplantation, and for potential future cell therapies for degenerative diseases. Not surprisingly, the literature is overwhelming and this book provides a good starting point. Thus, the reader generally interested in cord blood will find a complete overview of all major aspects of the cord blood field, whereas the newcomer to the field interested in a certain sub-category will find a thorough but concise background from which to pursue further literature searches.

Developmental Hematopoiesis
Methods and Protocols

Editor: Margaret H. Baron
Humana Press; Totowa NJ, USA; Oct. 2004
ISBN:
1-58829-296-7
480 pages, $135

"Developmental Hematopoiesis, Methods and Protocols (Margaret H. Baron, M.D., Ph.D., editor) is the latest volume (number 105) in the Methods in Molecular Medicine series from Humana Press (John M. Walker, series editor). As in previous titles and with other editors, Dr. Baron has taken seriously the task of compiling key methodological reviews from current leaders within the field. Here, the reader will find protocols that address in a very “how to” manner a wide variety of experimental schemes from creating transgenic animals (by Mikkola and Orkin, chapter 1) to the evaluation of quantitative trait loci (QTL’s, by Snoeck, chapter 3); bioinformatics (by Hackney and Moore, chapter 29) to flow cytometry (by Srour and Yoder, chapter 4). The book is further broken into detailed sections devoted to certain model organisms and systems including Drosophila (chapter 7), Xenopus (chapters 8 through 11), zebrafish (chapters 12 and 13), the chick (chapter 14), mice (chapters 15 through 26) and finally, humans (chapters 27 and 28). Given the availability of primate systems for hematopoietic investigation (including those from an embryonic stem cell starting point), the lack of a chapter summarizing these important tools is one shortcoming though perhaps a case of gilding the lily were it present, as the book already presents a wealth of fine material. With entries outlining many key in vivo and in vitro procedures (such as transplantation assays, conditional transgene systems, and thymic organ culture), this volume is something that every hematology research laboratories would benefit from having in its library. The book is broken into 29 chapters over four parts, is 464 pages, fully indexed, and illustrated with numerous figures, tables, and photographs including ten color plates.”

Germ Cell Protocols
Editor: Heide Schatten
Humana Press; Totowa NJ, USA; Mar. 2004
Volume 1: Sperm and Oocyte Analysis
ISBN: 1-58829-121-9
325 pages, $125
Volume 2: Molecular Embryo Analysis, Live Imaging, Transgenesis, and Cloning
425 pages, $125
ISBN: 1-58829-257-6

"Germ Cell Protocols offers a broad series of topics pertaining to the field of fertility research and germ cell biology. In addition to providing a wonderful resource concerning the technical details of a diverse offering of germ cell protocols, short introductions serve to contextualize these protocols. Standout chapters therefore include thorough introductions with background information, offering a greater understanding of the protocol in addition to technical information. Subjects include: spermatozoa viability assays, in vitro spermatogenesis systems, imaging of cell structures, and transgenesis and cloning. Although the range of the techniques offered may at first glance seem too broad to be useful, these two volumes serve as an invaluable and comprehensive resource for the germ cell researcher or veterinarian interested in employing or learning about new and advanced germ cell protocols."”

Stem Cells Handbook
Editor: Stewart Sell
Humana Press; Totowa NJ, USA; Oct. 2003
528 pages, $175.00
ISBN: 1-58829-113-8

"Stewart Sell's Stem Cells Handbook covers many key aspects of both adult and embryonic stem cell biology. Included are discussions on the appearance of different stem cell types during development, their function in the developing embryo and adult, their potential as therapeutic reagents in regenerative medicine and how their aberrant regulation may lead to cancer. The book additionally details descriptions of reproductive and therapeutic cloning, transgenics and techniques for visualising cells experimentally introduced into animal models of human disease. Roles for stem cells in regeneration and the maintenance of homeostasis in several non-mammalian species including anurans (e.g. frogs), urodeles (e.g. salamanders), Caenorhabditis (worms), and Drosophila (flies) are also described. Despite these strengths, extensive descriptions of dermal and cord blood stem cell biology, the molecular biology of stem cell self-renewal and strategies for counteracting stem cell immune rejection following transplantation are either absent or only brief. Furthermore, chapters detailing adult stem cell plasticity should be read in conjunction with more recent scientific literature documenting cell-cell fusion as a mechanism causal to apparent changes in cell fate. On the whole, however, if several inconsistencies are ignored and some loose definitions of developmental terms recognised, the Stem Cells Handbook makes a good introduction to and reference for a broad range of topics within the stem cell biology field."                                    - Richard Mollard , PhD, Monash University , Australia

The Human Embryonic Stem Cell Debate, Science, Ethics, and Public Policy
Editors: Suzanne Holland, Karen Lebacqz and Laurie Zoloth
The MIT Press, Cambridge MA, USA; 2001
288 pages, $24.95
ISBN 0-262-58208-2

"This book offers a foundation for thinking about the many issues involved in human embryonic stem cell research. It considers questions about the nature of human life, the limits of intervention into human cells and tissues, and the meaning of our corporeal existence. The fact that stem cells may be derived from living embryos that are destroyed in the process or from aborted fetuses ties the discussion of stem cell research to the ongoing debates on abortion. In addition to these issues, the essays in the book touch on broader questions such as who should approve controversial research and what constitutes human dignity, respect, and justice. The book contains contributions from the Ethics Advisory Board of the Geron Corporation; excerpts from expert testimony given before the National Bioethics Advisory Commission, which helped shape recent National Institutes of Health policy; and original analytical essays on the implications of this research.."—MIT Press
