ISSCR Elects New Officers, Board Members
Fiona Watt of the London Research Institute has been elected vice president of the International Society for Stem Cell Research. Her term begins in June 2006. Watt will serve as vice president for one year and as president-elect for one year, and will become ISSCR president following the 6th ISSCR Annual Meeting in 2008. Her term as president is one year.
Before the election Watt said, ISSCR must continue to foster the highest scientific, ethical and clinical standards, and encourage the best young scientists and clinicians to enter the field, while providing accurate scientific information about stem cell research to the media and public.
Other officers and board members have been elected to ISSCR leadership as well. Ihor Lemischka of Princeton University was elected clerk and Sean Morrison of the University of Michigan was elected treasurer.
Joining the ISSCR Board of Directors for their first appointments are Peter Andrews, University of Sheffield, UK, Claudio Bordignon, Fondazione Centro San Raffaele, Italy, Elaine Fuchs, Rockefeller University, and Lawrence Goldstein, University of California San Diego.
Returning for their second terms on the ISSCR Board of Directors are Alan Trounson, Monash University, Australia, Irving Weissman, Stanford University School of Medicine, and Laurie Zoloth, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
The International Society for Stem Cell Research is an independent, nonprofit membership organization established in 2002 to promote and foster the exchange and dissemination of information and ideas relating to stem cells, to encourage the general field of research involving stem cells and to promote professional and public education in all areas of stem cell research and application. ISSCR seeks to provide information to the public and granting agencies regarding the ethical concerns, biology and potential use of stem cells.
